“Shall We Dance?”: A Heartfelt New Film by Director Nelson Yeh, Celebrated for Collaborations with Taiwanese NPOs
Shall We Dance? is a micro-film released on October 30, 2024, directed by Nelson Yeh. It portrays the relationship between a recently widowed 70-year-old mother and her thirty-something daughter. The daughter suspects that her mother may be struggling with depression following her father’s death and seeks professional help. However, the mother is in denial, preferring to be left alone.
The film features a distinguished cast. The mother is portrayed by the esteemed Taiwanese actress Lu Hsiao-Fen, a highly respected veteran in the industry. The daughter is played by rising star Kimi Hsia, who has recently been nominated for a major award, while well-known comedic actor Kuo Tzu-Chien plays the father. Sixty-eight-year-old Lu Hsiao-Fen delivers a meticulously layered portrayal of geriatric depression. Under Nelson Yeh’s skilled direction, her tense exchanges with the frustrated daughter create emotionally charged scenes that move audiences to tears.
The film is presented by the John Tung Foundation (JTF), a prominent Taiwanese non-profit organization that has collaborated with director Nelson Yeh since 2005. In recent years, as awareness of Taiwan’s aging population has grown, geriatric depression has begun to receive serious attention. Shall We Dance? exemplifies how creative talents and non-profit organizations can work together to raise awareness for public causes.
